The TASCAM FW-1082 Audio/MIDI Interface and Control Surface from TASCAM and Frontier Design Group not only provides tons of audio and MIDI I/O to small studios, but offers a control surface with moving-faders for a previously unheard-of price.

The FW-1082 features 10 inputs, including four balanced XLR mic inputs with phantom power. Two MIDI inputs and outputs are also included, plus S/PDIF digital I/O. Eight channel strips each feature a 60mm touch-sensitive moving fader and select/solo/mute buttons, and a moving master fader is also provided.

The FW-1082 includes the latest TASCAM software bundle: Cubase LE 96kHz/48-track recording software and GigaStudio 3 LE streaming sampler.

The FW-1082 is a great choice for small studios, whether someone is just starting out or if they're upgrading their equipment. Its four microphone inputs, two with analog insert jacks, have phantom power for professional condenser microphones.

Four additional line inputs and a S/PDIF stereo input add up to 10 inputs simultaneously, each at 96kHz/24-bit audio resolution. Two MIDI inputs and outputs are provided for 32 channels of MIDI synth playback or control.

The control surface has nine 60mm touch-sensitive moving faders for silky-smooth control over channel level, pan or aux settings. Four encoders are also available for mix control, as well as transport and jog/shuttle controls. Stereo monitoring is included, and the FW-1082 even mixes signals internally for stand-alone use.

The FW-1082 includes Cubase LE professional 48-track, 96kHz recording and mixing software. It also includes GigaStudio 3 LE software sampling software, a 64-voice version of our groundbreaking streaming sampler.

It works well with Steinberg Cubase and Nuendo, Apple Logic, Apple Final Cut Pro, Soundtrack Pro and Motion, Cakewalk Sonar, MOTU Digital Performer. It also works as a HUI control surface and MIDI interface for Digidesign Pro Tools.

The TASCAM FW-1082: Five Crucial Studio Components in One

The TASCAM FW-1082 Audio/MIDI Interface and Control Surface provides three important studio components in one package. It's an audio interface: The FW-1082 is a 10-in, 4-out audio interface for your computer.

Four of the inputs are XLR mic ins, with phantom power for professional condenser microphones. Two of these include an insert jack, so you can plug in a compressor to keep dynamics under control and keep from distorting the recording.

It's a MIDI interface: The FW-1082 gives you 2 MIDI inputs and 2 MIDI outputs for connecting synths, modules and effects. Even if you're making the move to soft synths, the MIDI inputs allow you to connect your favorite controller or synth to use as a master keyboard.

It's a mixer: The FW-1082 includes a built-in 10 x 2 digital mixer. You get level and pan controls over each input. Use this to submix synths and effects to reduce the processing load on your CPU, or use it as a stand-alone mixer in a pinch.

It's a control surface: Sure, you can mix your project by pushing the little virtual faders and knobs on your computer screen. But you'll be much more creative using the touch-sensitive motorized faders on the FW-1082.

There are dedicated transport buttons (no more command-spacebar-key-combinations to remember) and knobs that can adjust panning, effect sends, EQ and soft synth parameters.

The TASCAM FW-1082: Three Layers of Control

The FW-1082 has three modes for its control surface: Computer, MIDI Control and Monitor Mix.

You can quickly switch between these three modes during a mix, and you'll see it's almost like having three control surfaces in your studio: Computer Mode: This is the mode you'll usually stay in.

Computer Mode is how you control your audio recording and sequencing software. The FW-1082 has three modes of control -- Native, Mackie Control Emulation and Mackie HUI emulation -- so it's compatible with just about any music software you can buy.

MIDI Control: In this mode, the FW-1082 acts as a MIDI fader controller. It sends MIDI controller data, either through the MIDI outputs or through the FireWire cable into your computer. Use this mode to control soft synths like Reason(R) or GigaStudio 3, or to edit effects processors or plug-ins.

Monitor Mix: This is where you control the FW-1082's built-in 10x2 mixer. You get level and pan controls for each channel. Using the buttons below the controller mode buttons, you can select whether the outputs are playing back just the computer output, just the internal mixer output, or a mix of the two.

TASCAM FW-1082 for Live Recording

With the portable FW-1082 and a laptop, you have everything you need to take your studio on the road. With two MIDI outputs, eight line ins and digital I/O connections, the FW-1082 makes a great command center for MIDI studios. Since it uses high-bandwidth FireWire to connect to a computer, the FW-1082 can record or mix enough audio and MIDI channels for the biggest synth productions.

The rear panel of the FW-1082 has eight balanced analog line inputs for getting all of your synths and modules into your DAW for mixing. There's also a 24-bit S/PDIF digital input for digital sources like a PC running GigaStudio 3.

Two MIDI ins and two MIDI outs provide up to 32 channels of MIDI information to your synths and modules.
